Brigadier Bruce Jackman OBE MC

Gurkhas: Bravest of the Brave – A lunchtime talk

Bruce was born in India when his father was serving in the 2nd Gurkha Rifles. He himself was subsequently commissioned into that regiment where he served for 31 years. His son followed him, serving 22 years with tours in Bosnia, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan. Bruce’s distinguished career included helping quell the Brunei Rebellion in 1962, followed by two operational tours in the Borneo 'Confrontation' where he was twice wounded in action. Aged 23 he was Mentioned in Despatches, and was also awarded the Military Cross for leading a cross-border raid to destroy an Indonesian forward operating base. Currently Chairman of the Gurkha Welfare Trust (Western Branch), he is passionate about the Gurkhas’ story: how, despite the fact that Nepal was never conquered, nor in the British Empire or Commonwealth, they have served the Crown loyally for over 200 years.
