"Growing Old Competitively: lessons from veteran athletes (and a few skydivers)"

Thursday 13 July, 12 noon Club Room, The Swan Wedmore BS28 4EQ

A specialist in photographing competitive athletes in their 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, Alex Rotas has been motivated by the inspiration of her formidable subjects: she took up running in her mid-60s and is now an ambassador for England Athletics’ #RunTogether campaign. Alex’s glorious images of the elderly in action provide a stimulating contrast to those stereotypes of frailty and dependency we have come to accept as the norm. Never mind ‘growing old gracefully’…. Why not limber up for a more positive and challenging alternative?

The photographs Alex Rotas takes are stunning. Not just technically brilliant but also truly inspirational. Her specialist subject is men and women over the age of 50 (many of them considerably older) who take their sport seriously. That’s not to say they are serious in a ‘joyless’ way; quite the contrary. The world of competitive sports for veterans is celebratory, empowering, life-enhancing and fun! Alex was so inspired by the people she was photographing that she’s now an ambassador for England Athletics #RunTogether. Even if you don’t see yourself going that far, come and hear her talk at midday on Thursday 13 July (link).

You’ll love seeing what it means to those who have… Plus you can then relax and enjoy a lovely lunch at the Swan Wedmore!

Tickets: £8 (£20 to include a light lunch in the Swan restaurant with the speaker)
